ROBOTICS WORKSHOP

Child Development and Concern Foundation (CDCF), a child focused organization, is passionately futuristic in view of the fact that the future of any society rightly belongs to the children of today. In the words of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the 32nd President of United States of America “we cannot always build the future for our youth but we can build our youth for the future”. This is one of the words of wisdom that drives our passion towards ensuring development of children, our future leaders. As technology is the driving force of the global economy we have decided to offer technological training to the school children to prepare them well for the future challenges. Robotics is one of the ‘next big things’ in the global community and its emergence as a useful technological advancement in the society cannot be over emphasized.

BENEFITS

Creativity

Robotics is a field of technology which incorporates creativity and fun simultaneously along with technical knowledge. Children can design and create amazing machines and devices just by using their creativity.

Futuristic

Robotics concocts students for the competitive workforce of tomorrow. Robotics allows children to work on their life skills along with their social skills. These skills help them to stand out of the crowd in front of their future employers.

Problem solving

Robots are designed and programmed to perform tough tasks which humans can’t do. While making robots, children think of a problem and try to solve it in the easiest way possible with the help of robots. Robotics makes children a real world problem solver.

Coding skill

In the programming stage of robot building, students work on various combinations of computer programming codes. They write, test, run, find an error and fix the issues in their codes. Its continuous practice strengthens their coding skill which gives them an head start in their professional life in computer science.

Teamwork

The field of robotic involves coming together of bright minds. Many robotics projects involve working with others in the team. This makes it essential for students to collaborate to make their projects a success. Besides, they need to work hand in hand to have a valuable output.

Exposure

As they proceed in the course and work with other students, it shows what they are good at and what they need to improve upon. It allows them to focus on their strength to put their best in the project.

A 3-Day Workshop on Robotics was organized by Child Development and Concern Foundation (CDCF) for secondary school students held at CDCF Office, Old Ife Road, Ibadan, Oyo State, from 11th to 13th April 2022. Twenty one students participated in the programme. The workshop targeted towards introducing students to the knowledge of robotics and how it can be applied in real life situations.

DAY ONE

DATE                                                 11TH April 2022

FACILATATOR                              Mr Olumuyiwa Omole

TOPIC                                               Introduction to Robotics

EVENT REPORT

Mr Omole gave an insight into why students should be involved in robotics and various disruptive technologies. He also shared stories to motivate the participants to aspire towards advancing their careers with optimism for greater life achievement.

The workshop was kicked off with the introduction of robotics by Mr. Omole, who took his time to introduce robotics to the participants in a simple and understandable terms. He took the participants through the rudiments of robotics.

Why do we need it?

What can be done with it?

How accessible is it in Nigeria?

What are the current breakthroughs?

Afterwards, the participants were grouped into four and tasked with coupling a mechanical robotic arm with syringe actuator. The participants’ enthusiasm showed they had fun assembling the robot.

DAY TWO

TOPIC                       Introduction to Coding

EVENT REPORT

The facilitator opened the second day of the workshop by introducing the participants to the basics of coding of programming, scratch programming and how powers robots. The coding exercise explained the concept and importance of programming and algorithm. After the short introduction to coding, the participants were grouped for a practical coding session.

DAY THREE

DATE                                                 13TH April 2022

TOPIC                                               Robotics and programming

EVENT REPORT

On the final day, the participants were amazed to see a robot that could move without any external push. They were also grouped and asked to couple and programme a robotic gripper and an ultrasonic rover to move freely. The final day was a combination of robot assembly and robot programming.

CIVIC AND MORAL EDUCATION (CME)

Civic and Moral Education is always included in CDCF training programs as a policy to ensure proper development of our children’s moral well-being. The prevailing low standard of morality in our society makes this inevitable as part of our contributions to ensure proper development of our society in line with our vision statement to produce responsible and productive future leaders.

During the three days workshop, the Executive Director of CDCF Alh. Iskil Yussuf took the participants through Civic and Moral Education in order to strengthen their moral well-being and complement their academic knowledge. CME develops well-being of individuals to acquire right values and exhibit right behavior to people and society at large.

Moral refers to ability to conform to principles of right and wrong in behavior. Moral and discipline are interrelated. A disciplined person must be morally upright. They were thought the value of respect which starts with respect for oneself and then to others which will be reciprocated.

CONCLUSION

Robotics is one of the disruptive technologies that is shifting and restructuring the global landscape. Institutions or educational systems must factor the knowledge and application of robotics into educational delivery to help learners become relevant and valuable in years to come. Finally, you should know that technology is the new ‘crude oil’ and that the future of work will be technology driven. Do not let your children and the children in your care be left behind.

The participants were awarded certificate at the end of the training programme.
