Zonta Clubs in Ibadan organized a program to commemorate the International Day of the Girl Child. Various schools were represented at the program. At the program, each of the schools presented a female student who all spoke briefly on different topics, like:
Importance of education to the Girl Child;
Gender equality;
Female empowerment and other educative topics.
After that session, some members of Zonta Clubs presented a drama that was centered on encouraging Girl Child to aspire to become successful in life without fear of any barrier or limitations. The drama piece enjoined girls in attendance to be seriously dedicated to their studies.
That session was later followed by a lecture delivered by Dr Mrs. Oluyemisi Abimbola, the Dean Faculty of Law, Lead City University, Ibadan. In her lecture, she spoke about the fact that every girl child have the opportunity to be successful in life, and to attain that height they must get empowered with appropriate and adequate knowledge through good education. She also corrected the erroneous impression that the role of the Girl Child is restricted to the kitchen or for marriage only. She admonished them to have positive aspirations for the future and become whatever they choose to be in life. To further prove her point, she mentioned some female dignitaries all around the world and also used herself as an example that against all odds, she is able to achieve landmark success in her career.
She further said that, the girls present in the program should not allow any guy to distract them from their path to success. She used the caption “marriage can wait”.
After her lectures, there was the questions and answers session which she handled to the satisfaction of the audience.
There was full introduction of all the members of Zonta Clubs in attendance to further inspire the girls, who are all students, at the program.
Zonta Clubs (female members only) stands for women’s right that advocate for equality, education, end to child marriage and gender based violence.
Child Development and Concern Foundation (CDCF), a member Organization of Child Protection Network (CPN), Oyo State participated in the program with one of the female students enjoying our Organization’s educational support, Maryam Bamidele, in attendance.
The programme ended with cheering remarks from the current President of the Zonta Clubs.
