ADOPT A SCHOOL CHILD PROGRAMME (ASCP)
ADOPT A SCHOOL CHILD: EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE
YOU HAVE NEVER REALLY LIVED, UNTIL YOU HAVE DONE SOMETHING FOR SOMEONE WHO CAN NEVER REPAY YOU.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Adopt a School Child is a support programme to assist indigent children in public primary and secondary schools to acquire quality education. The programme is the initiative of Child Development and Concern Foundation (CDCF) which came out of our findings that all children have the potentials to do well academically but this can be frustrated by lack of essential school needs such as text books and proper guidance. Even, if a child will go into vocational training, it is essential to have basic educational background to enhance his/her vocational knowledge.
Most public school children are without text books and in an environment without functional libraries. They are always seen on the streets during school hours, often found involved in activities capable of distracting them from serious academic programmes, lack psychosocial support in the form of counseling, career guidance, mentoring for proper guidance and orientation. They are not exposed to educative excursion activities unlike children of private schools. Such inadequacies can impede learning and limit the attainment of their potentials.
These are factors causing mass failure in the public examinations. The failure is dominant in public schools. But these deficiencies can be corrected with the provision of learning aids and proper guidance. All children are filled with talents and potentials that only need to be developed through offer of opportunities and proper guidance which would lead them to become responsible and productive adults.
With financial and psycho-social support, each child will have essential books, attend school and extramural classes regularly, be properly monitored in schools and at home to prevent distractions and be properly guided. They will be exposed to mentoring programmes and other extra-curricular activities like counseling and excursion activities to keep them focused in their academic programmes.
It is an established fact that most government schools are staffed with more qualified teachers than most private schools hence they can compete favourably with each other if children in public schools are adequately assisted with essential school needs.
We want public spirited individuals and organizations to support this project by providing the education needs of these poor children and our organization, CDCF, will coordinate the project. Sponsors can adopt one child or as many children as possible. Sponsorship cost of N 28980.00 and N41112.50 per session per child for primary and secondary school education respectively have its details below.
Your support can positively transform the lives of many poor ones and make our society more peaceful for all. We must not continue to feel indifferent to the plight of the indigent children who are in the overwhelming majority. Their neglect might constitute threats to the peace and development of our society.
TARGET GROUP
Direct Beneficiaries:
The programme is targeted at indigent but brilliant children of public primary and secondary schools as direct beneficiaries.
Indirect Beneficiaries:
The parents of these children will also be beneficiaries of the project through the relief they will enjoy in the payment for their children’s education while the transformed educational standard of the children will in the long run alleviate poverty in their homes.
The society and government at large will also benefit in the long run through positive contributions of the beneficiaries to the society as a result of quality education they would have received.
IMPACT OF THE PROJECT ON THE BENEFICIARIES
The direct beneficiaries of the project will be brilliant children from very poor homes who are in schools but generally exposed to difficult life, subjected to abuse of various types, exposed to delinquency and not prepared for brighter future. They are likely to drop-out of school, be victims of teenage pregnancy and early marriage, be involved in unguided activities, be causing troubles in schools and their communities and getting involved in examination malpractices.
This project is expected to shield them from these vices and transform them positively through regular counseling during monitoring and supervision activities both at home and school by our staff. The project will not only improve their academic abilities but also improve their moral standard and prepare them to become responsible and productive future leaders.
RATIONALE
Our children have the opportunity of going to schools but most of them are not properly educated. They come out with standard of education not useful to them or the society.
This is due to lack of learning aids and proper guidance which are required for the school’s programme to have positive impact in them. CDCF’s intervention is therefore, expected to correct the deficiency and enhance the quality of education of school children and literacy level in the society.
Many of them can do well if they have the required learning materials and psychosocial support to meet their needs and bridge the gap between their innate potentials and attainment of academic excellence. With this, quality of education will be enhanced and rate of failure in public examinations will be reduced without examination malpractices.
School children from indigent homes constitute majority of those who massively fail public examinations. They have the potentials to be academically good but lack the necessary support. We cannot afford to ignore them because they are in the majority.
CONCLUSION
Should we continue to look and glare at visible problems coming to us without intervening to prevent them in our most possible ways? Or do we want to wait for it to happen before we intervene and approach it with curative measures rather than preventive measures? Prevention is always said to be better than cure. The narrated problem calls for pragmatic intervention of all in the interest of all.
Children of the public schools are the most vulnerable to the narrated problems. Government has the responsibility of giving education to the children, but government cannot do it alone. It needs the support of corporate organizations and well to do individuals to offer quality education to indigent but brilliant children in our public schools by funding their educational needs. This class of children lack basic needs such as books, school uniform, school shoes and socks. They also lack proper monitoring and guidance to motivate their interest in learning, prevent unnecessary distractions and develop their talents and potentials in order to maximize the opportunity of having access to schools.
CDCF wants you to adopt at least a child or as many as you can by financing the education of indigent but brilliant children and reduce the problem of poor quality education, mass failure, examination malpractices, drop out of schools and other related consequences.
A society that fails to care for its children has failed to prepare for the future. How then can we build or prepare our children and youth for the future? It is only through quality education.
CDCF wants you to be part of this noble and rewarding project of ‘’ADOPT A SCHOOL CHIILD’’ to promote acquisition of quality education and break the cycle of poverty and its attendant problems in our society.
Sponsors can select children of their choice in any school and hand over to CDCF for management or assign CDCF the responsibility of selecting indigent school children from any school. At the end of each term, school performance reports on such child(ren) shall be forwarded to their respective sponsors.

In pursuit of its objectives, it has adopted 7 public primary schools, 4 public secondary schools, 4 private primary schools and 3 private secondary schools for its activities. We always offer civic and moral education to children, sensitise parents on child care at the Parents’ Forum and organise capacity building programmes for the teachers of our adopted schools.
The Organization was founded by its Executive Director who is a social worker and a retired Controller of Prisons. He has competent staff on his Management team that is responsible to the Board of Directors made up of people with honour and integrity. The Organization also has a team of dedicated volunteers to serve on the project.
Its mission statement: “to create awareness on the need for children’s guidance and opportunities through a developmental process that leads to full realization of their potentials and thus lead them to becoming responsible and productive adults”, drives us on how to prepare children for the future. CDCF has all it takes to properly build our children for the future.
The organisation which is interested in contributing its quota towards Nation’s development sees development as futuristic. Development therefore entails having a brighter future which is to manifest in what becomes of today’s children in future. Nation’s Development will be determined by how well children are prepared educationally to meet future challenges. Education is the key to development. According to Franklin Delano Roosevelt, “we cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future”.
